BEARCATS PANTRY
DESIGN RESEARCH / LAYOUT / ILLUSTRATION
In America, 13.5% of households struggle with food insecurity. On average, 30% of college students are food insecure–– that’s roughly 16,000 students at UC.  UC students who use the Bearcats Pantry (BCP) want to learn how to create nutritious meals with available ingredients,
but encounter barriers due to the lack of accessible and engaging information. With design, we can help! This project utilizes printed recipe cards organized in a recipe box, containing easy-to-make recipes made from ingredients found in the pantry, paired with educational tips/facts regarding nutrition. Made in collaboration with Maggie Weaver.
The Statistics
In the past academic year, 1,615 members of the Bearcat community utilized the BCP in over 6,700 visits. Compared to
the statistical need, nutritional requirements for these students aren't being met. How can we make the pantry
provide accessible and engaging information?
The Pantry
The BCP aims to become a premier, model resource and research center for the community, non-profits, and other higher education institutions. We strive to provide a robust network of support that promotes health, independence, and success for everyone in the university community. But, how can we make these resources centralized and digestible?
Design Research - Analysis
After conducing design research with handcrafted surveys, we learned four important design criteria's for the recipe cards content.
Explore & Experiment Methods
After learning what users would like for content, the next step was an optimal layout for the pantry.
Additionally, ensuring easy browsing and accessibility for reproduction of materials from the pantry employees was  important.
Execution & Evaluation Methods
Applying learnings from exploring and experimentation methods to determine early layouts with the chosen recipes.
